The First Official Debate topic of Fall

OK so we've had a few interesting...starters. But this one is for real. You can deal with your issues later we need a topic! So I don't know if any of you have ever read any of the Old Testiment but I have (well some of it). I'm currently making my way through 2 Samuel if anyone wants to join me. In any case.

Katie suggested that we disscuss the death penalty. So. Do you think it's right?

I really don't know what to say about this one. They are murderers and certainly deserve the worst. However, we have a just and forgiving God who is all about second chances. Some of them truely deserve another chance, they did change. Others cause people to fear for their lives once they hear they've been realsed from jail.

Or what about life sentance. I certainly wouldn't want to spend the rest of my days in a jail. I think I'd rather get the death penalty. But maybe that's the point, they're supposed to suffer. After all, I said just God not just government.

Well I'm clearly torn. What do you think about all this? leave a comment will ya?

love and prayers
Meags

Why end their life? Even though its """"legal"""" its POINTLESS! They murdered someone, yes, but why kill them back in return? Its really not like their going to come back and apologize and you havent accomplished anything by killing him/her, you didnt teach them a lesson, you didnt help them in any way. You simply did to them what they were convicted for!!

It is only legal in some US states...Im not sure about anywhere else, but it doesn't exist in Canda. (So for all you cons out there, don't worry. You'll only rot in jail with a bunch of old gay men.) I know that there is bad things and sin in this world, but I still don't think it does anything to lock anyone up (or kill them). In my history class we were talking about how great the Native American system worked before there were any immigrants to the Americas. If someone did something (like killing someone or discracing the community), the tribe would put the person into exile. This is, they would shun the person. That person could then go try to find another tribe, live by themselves, or in most cases they would kill themselves. They knew that it would be insanely hard to survive on their own and almost as hard to join another tribe. That was their punishment and that seems to be one of the reasons why their society worked so well. No one had any authority to torture anyone else, no one could lock anyone up, and everyone (basically, except the chief and some elders) considered themselves equal to everyone else.
I know the world we live in now could no longer function this way, but look back at Native American history. How many times did they have huge fights with one another? They knew respect and discipline. Today, in this world, we seem to have none of that. There is a person in charge (or persons in the case of a jury) who can sentese someone to death or sentense them to be locked up in a prison cell. It just doesn't seem to be like a very good system at all. I am opposed to the death penalty (mostly becaues of the Bible where it says any sort of killing at all is a sin and that only God should make choices of who lives and who dies), and I certainly don't like the idea of prision either.
Sorry about the rambling.

TC COMMENT

TC will comment if he wants and it doesn't seem he's even reading this anymore. He'll do so in his own good time.

OK so back to the real debate. The whole native American thing makes sense. But, we can't do that in today's world. I think prison is alright, I don't really want serial killers roaming the streets but maybe not death is the answer. People must have some sort of punishment but I dont believe that death is the right answer. For one, people can change. It's hard to accept that someone twisted enough to kill someone can all of the sudden become a devout Christian but things can happen. God can work miracles everywhere, even within prison walls, probably more so there. If people are convicted and aren't guilty what can we do? How are we to know if they are truly innocent? How are we to know if they truly changed their ways if they are guilty. We don't. But everyone deserves a second chance right? I say this but when I hear that people were released from prison early, it still sends shivers down my spine. So I'm just as bad as Hannah for the loooooooooong comments. Does anyone else have anything to say?

Who gave us the power to judge someone?

Jesus said that only God can judge people, and that moment will come on judgement day. So howcome we fancy ourselves God and think that we can punish someone?

TC i dont like what you said, to but it bluntly. this moderator thing may be getting out of hand; i agree with hannah, you dont have thr right to "correct, rebuke, and encourage". my parents and God only can do that for me. and i dont take it from anyone else unless its very important, and besides that, TC, you are our peer, and you get in fights too, i believe. But i can also see where you are coming from, we DO get into alot of arguments and fights. but i dont think its an excuse to delete a bunch of stuff and "correct, rebuke, and encourage" us.
Im not trying to get off topic or be rude, i hope your weren't offended.

TC i know what you mean but I see why Pheonix is offended. You make it sound like you are above us. I think if you explain where your coming from it willgo over a bit better.

Well according to 2 Timothy. It is OUR job to Correct Rebuke and Encourage. And i do have the right, as much as you do. But watch what you do it too.

Who said anything about Judging??? I sure didn't.

And please inform me of ONE! time i have deleted anything!

The judging thing had to do with the post I believe, you know the debate. The reason why we have this blog?

(I'm not angry with any of you just so you know. I just wish you'd fight off of the blog pages)

We've got to stop fighting or we'll loose this blog or far worse our friendship. Please guys, I love you all.

At 5/10/06 7:09 PM, Blogger phoenix said...

yeah it may be our job too...but something in your comment striked me as judgemental. and someone on this blog told me you deleted stuff.

ps. these fights are RIDICULOUS!! i am seriously considering leaving this blog because of all the stupid fights we get in!

At 5/10/06 10:36 PM, Blogger T.C. said...

wow. amen. I didn't delete anything. And i was sure Hannah meant the post. But yeah, feelings have been hurt. The only reason i have seen the fights start is because of when people see one flaw the attack at the throat! The rest of that verse i put from 2tim. says to be patient in the encouraging and do it in a loving manner. I haven't seen much of that.

That's why i rarely say anything on here.

I strongly believe that we must not judge others in EVERY single aspect of our lives. God is the only one who can judge anyone, say what is godly, what is wrong, and everything else that humans try to control.

I really think that everyone is equal. We are all just peers to one another, and no one should be "moderating" or influencing.

Hannah I agree with what u said.
The ONLY one who can judge us is the Lord up above!

AMEN, nick. And TC, really, we mean no offense by this and I think you're a great person. But maybe you should just leave the true moderating to God and you just stick to changing the template. ok?

2 Timothy-
2Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.

"I don't want you condemning anymore good people."
Would you concider yourself one of those good people? Would you concider ingnoring and refusing to talk to someone about a fight being a good person?
Any time you want to discuss our problem like mature Christians I'm all ears! :)

At 8/10/06 11:00 PM, Blogger T.C. said...

Here are some verses that MAY, explain some things. Not for sure, that's why i said "may" or Might.

Proverbs 13 -

13He who scorns instruction will pay for it,
but he who respects a command is rewarded.
14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,
turning a man from the snares of death.
15 Good understanding wins favor,
but the way of the unfaithful is hard.
16 Every prudent man acts out of knowledge,
but a fool exposes his folly.

18He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame,
but whoever heeds correction is honored

20He who walks with the wise grows wise,
but a companion of fools suffers harm

I just ask that you think of some of these things.

TC you pretty much called me a stupid idiot last night who didnt know a thing of what she was talking about. and dont even try denying it. BUT, i am sorry for getting frustrated with you.

also, i have NOT been condemning anyone!
TC i am just a annoyed at you for being such a control freak and for not letting nick on the blog, and then when he didnt listen to "the wisdom you showered on him" you got mad! (i also cannot beleive you said "the wisdom you showered on them") does that qualify condemning you? or anyone else? and you said "condemning anymore good PEOPLE" meaning it was more than one, so please tell me who these people ARE.
